In April 2010, the FDA approved the first generic formulations of losartan potassium, the active ingredient found in Cozaar®, and losartan potassium in combination with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) found in Hyzaar®. Losartan is indicated for use in the treatment of hypertension, diabetic nephropathy in Type 2 diabetics with a history of hypertension and to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy. These cardiovascular medications are excluded on Progressive Medical’s medication plans, with the exception of the cardiovascular plan. Coverage of these medications may be seen in cases where cardiovascular conditions or diabetes have been accepted on a claim. With regard to cost, generic versions are approximately $0.20-0.40 less per tablet than their brand counterpart. For instance, AWP* for Cozaar 50mg is $2.56/tablet versus $2.26/tablet for generic losartan and Hyzaar 100mg/25mg is $3.85/tablet versus $3.41/tablet for generic losartan/HCTZ 100mg/25mg.
