On June 28, the FDA approved the first generic formulation of Effexor XR, now available as venlafaxine hydrochloride extended-release capsules. Venlafaxine HCl is indicated for use in the treatment of depression and certain anxiety disorders; however, it may also be used investigationally to treat neuropathic pain as well as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The generic capsules are available in 37.5mg, 75mg and 150mg strengths. With regard to cost, the generic formulation is approximately $0.65-0.80 less per capsule than its brand counterpart (depending on strength). For instance, AWP* for Effexor XR 75mg is $5.40/capsule versus $4.67/capsule for generic venlafaxine extended-release. Use of this medication for an injured party may be appropriate if depression, anxiety, PTSD and/or neuropathic pain is compensable to the claim.
