Background
A 52 year old female with a history of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain secondary to multiple motor vehicle accidents was involved in a third motor vehicle accident, leading to an exacerbation of her TMJ pain. She was diagnosed with chronic facial pain, trigeminal neuralgia, and TMJ dysfunction and has undergone multiple oral surgeries including a total mandibular joint prosthesis.
Intervention
An InterventionRX™ (a comprehensive review of the claimant’s medical records and prescription history) was completed by the clinical pharmacist. Her medication regimen contained four potentially inappropriate medications, usage of brand name medication when generic was available, potentially inappropriate dosing, a possible adverse drug event, and an untreated condition.
Results
The pharmacist’s suggestions were to begin treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, discontinue several medications, and attempt to optimize treatment of TMJ dysfunction. Therapy recommendations would reduce the number of medications from six to three.
