Drug manufacturer Novo Nordisk, Inc. has recently discontinued several of their insulin delivery devices for the treatment of diabetes, effective as of December 31, 2009. These products include:
Novolin® R InnoLet®
Novolin® N InnoLet®
Novolin® 70/30 InnoLet®
Novolin® R PenFill®
Novolin® N PenFill®
Novolin® 70/30 PenFill®
Pharmacies will still be able to dispense these products to patients while their supplies last; however, they will be unable to receive any new shipments once they run out. The affected insulin formulations will still be available in vials; however, there must be a new prescription to dispense the vials in place of the pens. Other manufacturers still produce similar pen-type delivery devices, although the type of insulin given would be different. Patients currently on affected medications should contact their physician to discuss which alternative formulation or therapy is best for them.
