In November 2009, the FDA approved Qutenza® (capsaicin 8%) as a new non-narcotic analgesic patch. Currently, it is only indicated for the treatment of pain due to postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a type of nerve pain associated with shingles (herpes zoster). The active ingredient capsaicin is a substance found in chili peppers that provides the heat sensation; Qutenza® contains a synthetic form of this substance. Clinical studies show that Qutenza® reduced PHN pain for up to 12 weeks with the one-hour application of as many as four patches. Patches can be cut to best cover areas affected by PHN pain. Common side effects include redness at the site of application, increased blood pressure and itching.
