The use of Singulair® (montelukast) in preventing migraine attacks is shown to be very well tolerated but not effective in reducing migraines. Two different studies looked at the effects that Singulair has on migraine attack frequency. The first study showed the potential that Singulair may play a role in reducing migraine attacks. However, the study was poorly designed and an additional more in-depth study was performed to see if there truly are benefits in using Singulair in migraine patients. The second study, which was better designed, showed opposite results. This study showed that although patients tolerated Singulair well and experienced little to no side effects, therapy with Singulair did not have any effect on the frequency of migraine attacks. Although the initial study showed potential for the use of Singulair in migraine prophylaxis, the stronger study showed with more certainty that Singulair has no real benefit in preventing migraine attacks.
