Another recent medication to come out in a generic formulation is Flomax, now available as tamsulosin capsules. Flomax is indicated for use in the treatment of the symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), a condition involving enlargement of the prostate in men, which blocks urine output. It is also used investigationally for the general relief of symptoms of bladder outlet obstruction or dysfunction.[1] When used to treat an injured party, Flomax may be used off-label to treat urinary retention and difficulty urinating due to the following causes:
- Nerve damage, such as spinal cord injury and herniated or ruptured disks in the vertebral column
- Recent surgery, due to the use of anesthetics and immobility
- Blockage of the urethra caused by injury
- Prolonged immobility due to paralysis
