New information is out questioning the possible link between Chantix® (varenicline), a smoking cessation agent, and suicide. A study published in the British Medical Journal found “no clear evidence” of a link between varenicline and increased risk of serious mental problems, including self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or depression. The study examined approximately 11,000 patients taking Chantix® between September 2006 and May 2008, including their medical records while they were using the product and for three months after they had completed therapy. Researchers caution that the study’s smaller size may limit its application in clinical practice. In July 2009, the FDA required that Chantix® include a Black Box Warning in its product information, outlining the possible severe behavioral changes associated with use of the medication.
