In May 2010, the FDA approved Vimovo®, a new combination product containing both a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI). Vimovo® combines extended release enteric-coated naproxen with esomeprazole, the active ingredient found in the drug Nexium®. This combination product is indicated for use in the treatment of arthritis pain and pain specifically associated with ankylosing spondylitis. Combining a NSAID with a PPI is meant to decrease the risk of NSAID-associated gastric ulcers. Clinical trials have so far shown a marked decrease in incidence of ulcers in patients taking Vimovo® versus patients receiving NSAIDs alone. Reported side effects include indigestion, inflammation of the stomach lining, diarrhea, upper abdominal pain, and nausea.
Vimovo is not yet currently available. Progressive MedicaI’s clinical team will provide an update when this new product is on pharmacy shelves.
