Background
A 45-year old female was injured while transferring a patient from a wheelchair to a table. As a result, she developed severe burning pain in her neck and upper back, chronic migraine headaches and disc herniations. Despite years of physical therapy and occipital nerve block procedures, she continues to require the use of five medications. She has comorbid conditions including, depression, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and insomnia.
Intervention
A comprehensive review of the claimant’s medical records and prescription history by the clinical pharmacist revealed a potential drug-drug interaction, a duplication of therapy for treatment of pain, an inappropriate dose of a medication and several inappropriate medications.
Results
Recommendations made by the clinical pharmacist resulted in the elimination of the drug-drug interaction, appropriate dosing of all medications and appropriate treatment of pain and depression.
Potential Savings
Accepted therapy recommendations will result in savings of $54,724 per year.
