Background
A 62 year old male had suffered a low back injury and subsequently underwent a lumbar fusion. Current complaints included low back pain with radiation to his legs. EMG documented the presence of radiculopathy.
Intervention
An Intervention RX™ (a comprehensive review of the injured party’s medical records and prescription history) was completed by the clinical pharmacist. His medication regimen contained duplications in therapy, excessive duration of use and a major drug-drug interaction. The pharmacist’s suggestions were to discontinue several medications to eliminate the clinical concerns and to optimize doses of the remaining medications.
Results
The results of the Intervention RX and peer to peer discussion indicated the treating physician would make changes to the injured party’s medications. Upon discussion with the claims professional, the physician was implementing changes by eliminating two medications.
Actual savings
The resultant savings per year (AWP) as a result of the Intervention RX are approximately $4,600.
