External compression pumps help stimulate blood and fluid movement. They are often used to treat injured parties who suffer from Lymphedema or Deep Vein Thrombosis for treatment of blood clots. Compression pumps can be used for acute care for a temporary condition or chronic care for long-term therapy.
Benefits of Compression Therapy to the injured party include:
· Ease of use
· Non-invasive
· Clinically proven
· Relaxing for injured parties
· Few side effects
What is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)?
DVT is a condition in which there is a blockage in a deep vein, caused by long durations of little or no body movement. Symptoms may vary, although some experience no symptoms at all. DVT can be dangerous as these blockages can travel to the lungs and cause a life threatening pulmonary emboli.
Types of DVT Pumps:
Several types of pumps are available including:
· Those designed to reduce the incidence of DVT. It is widely used in all types of surgery situations for patients at risk of DVT formation.
· Those designed to reduce the incidence of DVT during all types of major surgery including orthopedic, trauma, urological and general surgery.
· An advanced option designed with flexibility and simplicity in mind.
What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a condition in which lymph fluid fails to circulate properly, resulting in swelling and reduced movement in extremities. It may also result in infection and skin breakdown. Lymphedema can be caused by damaged lymphatics, missing vessels and by poor venous circulation.
Types of Lymphedema Pumps:
Two types of pumps are widely accepted for the treatment of Lymphedema.
The first is an automated pump that pushes air into channels built into the garment worn by the injured party. When in use, the controls of the pump cause the garment to inflate and release in gentle sequential movements that imitates the natural flow of lymph from the distal end of the limb (hand or foot) toward the trunk of the body.
The second differs from other pumps in that it automatically completes both the preparatory stage prior to the therapy and the actual treatment phase of therapy including the proper pressure and length of treatment.
