What is Continuous Passive Motion?
Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) is designed as a post-operative treatment for an injured party who has undergone extensive joint surgery.
When Should CPM Be Used?
Often times, after the injured party has extensive joint surgery, movement of the joint can cause severe pain. As a result, the injured party fails to move the joint, causing the joint to become stiff and scar tissue to form. This prevents the joint from healing properly, leaving the injured party with a limited range of motion and potentially months of physical therapy to fully recover. The use of CPM provides the injured party with a passive range of motion without the injured party’s muscles being used.
What are the Benefits of a CMP Device?
A CPM device with a prescribed range of motion significantly aids in the recovery time of extensive joint surgery in the following ways:
- Decreases soft tissue stiffness
- Increases range of motion
- Allows the soft tissue and joint surfaces to heal
- Prevents the formation of scar tissue
